TheIEEERefutesSpecialRelativityEvidenceofthesadstateofscienceeducationcanbeseenintheIEEETransactionsonInstrumentationandMeasurement,whichrecentlypublishedpapersclaimingtorefutespecialrelativity.Thisallegedrefutationfirstsurfacedin2003withthepublicationofapaperentitled"AbsenceoftheRelativisticTransverseDopplerShiftatMicrowaveFrequencies"(Vol52,No.5).Thepaperclaimedthatspecialrelativity(asdescribedinEinstein'spaperof1905forexample,orinanyfreshmanphysicstext)predictsafrequencyshiftforanelectromagneticsignalpassingbetweenatransmitterandreceivermutuallyatrestinsomeinertialframe,ifthesignalisrelayedbytwoantennasmovinginoppositedirectionstransversetothesignal.SchematicallythesituationisasdepictedinthefigurebeloNow,it'sobviousbyinspectionthattherecanbenoDopplershiftbetweentransmitterandreceiverinthiscondition,withtherelayantennasmovingpurelytransverselytothesignal,becausethetransmitterandreceiveraremutuallyatrest,andthepathlengthbetweenthemisnotchanging.Despitethis,theIEEEpaperarguesthattheroteapplicationoftheformulasofspecialrelativity,asgiveninEinstein’s1905forexample,somehowleadstoapredictionofaDopplershiftfactorof(1+v2)/(1v2).TheIEEEpaperthendescribesanexperimentdesignedtotestthisallegedpredictionbyplacingrelayantennasontherimsoftwocounterrotatingdisksbetweenamicrowavetransmitterandreceiver.Thepaperreportsthatnoshiftwasobserved,andfromthisitconcludesthatspecialrelativityhasbeenfalsified.Needlesstosay(orsoonewouldhavethought),thisisabsurd,sincespecialrelativityunambiguouslypredictszeroDopplershiftforthepurelytransversesituationdepictedabove.(Weleaveasidethequestionofwhethertheexperimentalsetupwasvalid.Obviouslywhentherelayantennasareinnon-transversepositions,therewouldbesomevaryingDopplershift,buttheIEEEpaperdoesnotconsideranyconditionsotherthanthepurelytransverseone–nordoesitreportanycyclicalvariationintheobservedfrequencies,whichisrathersuspicious,butnevermind.)ToshowthattheformulasinEinstein’s1905paperleadunambiguouslytothepredictionofzeroshiftforthepurelytransversecondition,letf0,f1,f2,andf3denotethefrequenciesoftheelectromagneticsignalatthetransmitter,thefirstantenna,thesecondantenna,andthereceiver,respectively,eachexpressedintermsofthestandardinertialcoordinatesmomentarilyco-movingwiththerespectiveobjects.Also,letu=2v/(1+v2)denotethevelocityofthesecondantennarelativetothefirst,makinguseofthewell-knownrelativisticvelocitycompositionformula.Now,accordingtospecialrelativity,thefrequenciesarerelatedbytherelativisticDopplerformula(aspresentedinEinstein’s1905paper),whichgiveswhereistheangleofthewaveintermsofthetransmitter'srestframe,'istheangleofthewaveintermsofthefirstantenna'srestframe,and"istheangleofthewaveintermsofthesecondantenna'srestframe.Noticethat,asspecifiedinEinstein’s1905paper(andineveryintroductorytextonspecialrelativity),theangleappearingineachDopplerformulaisdefinedintermsoftherestframecoordinatesoftheemittingobject.Theangleofthewavenormalisintermsoftheinertialrestframecoordinatesofthetransmitterandreceiver,andthetworelayantennasaremovingwithspeeds+vand–vrelativetothatframe,sothedirectioncosinesofthewavenormalintermsoftheinertialrestframecoordinatesoftherelayantennasaregivenbytherelativisticaberrationformula(alsopresentedexplicitlyinEinstein’s1905paper)asInsertingtheseanglesintotheprecedingDopplerformulas,andsetting=90degrees,wegetthefreq...
